Personal
Flotation Devices (PFD's): Massachusetts
law requires children under 12 years old to wear a USCG–approved
Type I, II, III, or V PFD whenever above deck on any
vessel underway. The Columbia is fully equipped with
Type I and
Type II PFD's. These provide excellent flotation, but
they can become extremely uncomfortable when worn for
extended
periods. A well
fitted Type III or V vest or jacket is preferable. They
can be purchased at Kmart, Walmart, sporting goods stores
and marine outfitters for under $20.
Sea Sickness: The Columbia fishes the
protected waters of Cape Cod Bay. Sea sickness is a rare
occurrence. However, young children are more likely than
adults to experience sea
sickness
due
to their
developing inner ear. If your child has a history of motion
sickness (car, air, etc.), consult with your physician
prior to your sailing date. There are many effective
preventative medications available.
If your child has not had any prior motion sickness incidents,
consider packing the following items
- just in case:
- Sea-Band® - these wrist bands, operate by
applying pressure on the Nei Kuan acupressure point on
each wrist
by means of a plastic stud. Captain Derrick used these
for years! They can be purchased at Kmart, Stop & Shop
and most pharmacies.
- Ginger Root - ginger settles the stomach quickly and
comes in pill form, candy, raw, powdered, paste,
dehydrated, and cookies. Your local health food store
will have the best selection.
If you or your child begins to feel sick off-shore, inform
the mate. Our crew is experienced with sea sickness and
can
provide assistance.
Supervision: The Columbia is a working
fishing vessel. The crew is onboard to ensure a successful
fishing experience. Their responsibilities
are numerous. They can not provide adequate supervision
for your children. Parents should familiarize themselves
with safety procedures and potential hazards and guide
their children
accordingly throughout
the entire charter.
